Everyone who renders Professional Spiritual Services (e.g., spiritual companions, clergy, chaplains, etc.) owes it to their clients to engage in periodic supervision. This enables them to give their clients the level of service that every client deserves.
Supervision is one of my specialties. I have 15 years of experience providing supervision and training in supervision. I also have 23 years of experience as a church pastor (UCC). I provide supervision to a variety of professionals including spiritual companions, clergy, and chaplains.
Through supervision, I help enhance your ability to nurture the spiritual growth of your clients. This is done in several ways, including:
The supervisor and supervisee together take a “long, loving look” at a brief example of a session where the one being supervised has provided spiritual companioning (spiritual direction) to a client.
Together, they notice how the supervisee’s sensitivity to movements of the Spirit/Sacred have or could have facilitated the process.
The supervisor helps the one supervised recognize where their own personal issues may have gotten in the way of freely being with the client—wherever the client may happen to be at present.
The supervisor also helps the one supervised to notice their growing edges and to celebrate the growth taking place. This process helps the supervisee to discover, claim, and refine their unique way of being a spiritual companion.
Time is also provided during sessions for discussion of “What should I do when..." consultative questions.
Note: I offer Supervision services on an individual as well as a peer-group basis. The goals and methods used in each setting are very similar, but the differing dynamics in each produce valuable results in distinct ways. Clients often utilize these services once a month, but other frequencies are available.
